TPC Scottsdale Unveils New Monument to Aces at 16

January 27, 2019 by WM Phoenix Open Leave a Comment

The PGA TOUR’s most iconic hole – the par-3 16th at TPC Scottsdale – has its roots in fan experience and stadium-style viewing areas, but nothing like what it is today. The berms and hills throughout the course provided guests of the tournament high-standing viewing areas on which they could view multiple holes designed to combat the tight quarters of the old locations at Phoenix and Arizona Country Clubs. The area behind the 16th tee box was no exception, although it did have a TGIF tent where fans could have a few libations – the spark that built the eventual coliseum.

In 1997, a wide-eyed and fresh-faced Tiger Woods aced his third-round tee shot at 16. The result was a deafening roar heard ‘round the course as Woods, caught up in the excitement, missed a few high-fives and “raised the roof” as he walked down the forced carry to remove his ball from the cup.

Tiger wasn’t the first to ace the iconic 16th hole at TPC Scottsdale, nor would he be the last, but his moment in 1997 was the catalyst for the creation what the short par-3 is today.

Now, the names of the lucky few who have aced the par-3 16th are forever enshrined at the iconic hole; their names etched into eternity on a monument dedicated to the new age of golf and the players who found glory at the Waste Management Phoenix Open’s most popular hole.

The Thunderbirds – hosts of the Waste Management Phoenix Open – announced today Kelley James has been added to the Friday lineup at the 2019 Coors Light Birds Nest, the popular entertainment venue at the [geoswitch][geoswitch_case country_code=”US” state_code=”AZ”]Waste Management Phoenix Open Presented by the Ak-Chin Indian Community[/geoswitch_case][geoswitch_case]Waste Management Phoenix Open[/geoswitch_case][/geoswitch]. James will join The Chainsmokers and Snoop Dogg for the sold-out Friday show.  This will mark the third-consecutive year James has performed at the Birds Nest. Tickets can be purchased by visiting www.coorslightbirdsnest.com.

Additionally, Ford, Hakkasan Nightclub and Omnia Nightclub have signed on as sponsors for three of the four nights of the concert series.

A multi-talented musician, James blends a mash-up of rock, pop and the beachside vibes he grew up loving as a California native. Kelley’s signature sound creatively combines acoustic guitar with clever lyrics and freestyle vocal riffs that instantly convert all attendees of his live shows into loyal fans.

Wednesday night at the Birds Nest – presented by Ford – showcases a country music lineup that includes Old Dominion, Midland and Brandon Lay. Old Dominion and their blend of old-fashioned country charm and hook-heavy pop makes the stop in Scottsdale as part of their “Make it Sweet” tour, highlighting their new single of the same name. Neotraditionalist Country music trio, Midland, launched their debut album, On The Rocks, in 2017, hitting the #2 spot on Billboard’s U.S. Country chart. The group also took home the 2018 American Country Music Award for best new vocal group.

Thursday night – presented by Hakkasan Nightclub – continues the country theme with another solid lineup featuring Jake Owen, Lee Brice and Michael Ray. Owen – a regular performer at the Coors Light Birds Nest – is best known for his third album, “Barefoot Blue Jean Night” which reached the No. 1 spot on the U.S. Billboard Top Country Albums in 2011.

Brice is a two time ACM Award winner;  a GRAMMY and CMA nominee; has taken five radio singles to #1: “A Woman Like You”, “Hard To Love”, “I Drive Your Truck”, “I Don’t Dance”, and “Drinking Class”; and has penned two #1 radio singles for other artists: “Crazy Girl” (Eli Young Band) and “More Than A Memory” (Garth Brooks).

Switching gears from Country music, the SOLD OUT Friday, Feb. 1 lineup – now including Kelley James – showcases headline acts from different music genres – GRAMMY-Award winning pop duo The Chainsmokers and hip-hop/rap superstar Snoop Dogg. The Chainsmokers catapulted to worldwide stardom in 2016 with 3 certified Multi-Platinum hits. “Roses,” featuring Rozes, from their Gold certified debut EP Bouquet, was a 4X Platinum smash that shot to No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart. Rapper, singer, songwriter, record producer, television personality, entrepreneur, and actor, Snoop Dogg is one of the most widely recognized hip-hop artists of all time, selling more than 37 million albums worldwide. The song became a hit in a number of countries in Europe, and allowed Garrix to become the youngest person to reach No. 1 on Beatport – an American electronic music-oriented online music store.

“Music fans are really in for a special couple of nights on the weekend with such popular acts as Snoop Dogg, Chainsmokers and Martin Garrix,” Golding said. “With such an outstanding lineup this might be one of the strongest and most unique four-night set of concerts we have ever seen at the Coors Light Birds Nest.”

First Place is a residential property for people with Autism and other neurodiversities. The property contains 55 apartments housing 79 people and represents a new wave of thinking behind community life for people with autism. First Place’s big idea is to ensure housing and community options are as available for people with autism or with different abilities as they are for everyone else.

“First Place is committed to meeting new challenges and shares our views of how important our community members are,” said Chance Cozby, Tournament Chairman of the Waste Management Phoenix Open. “They’ve created an innovative new property and Thunderbirds Charities is honored to be part of an organization like First Place.”

Recently, Thunderbirds Charities donated funds to build a brand-new activity pool where residents can swim, play volleyball, attend aquatics classes or simply hang out.

“We greatly appreciate Thunderbirds Charities for donating our sports pool,” said Denise Resnik, Founder and CEO of First Place AZ. “It encourages residents to get out of their room and connect in a space which is good for themselves, good for their hearts and good for building relationships and friendships.”
