WM Phoenix Open

Thomas, Fowler, Varner On Top After Round One

February 1, 2019 by WM Phoenix Open Leave a Comment

Thursday’s first round kicked off tournament play at the 2019 Waste Management Phoenix Open, and already the competition is fierce. Justin Thomas, Rickie Fowler and Harold Varner III sit atop the leaderboard at 7-under-par 64 after their first 18 holes. Thomas’ hot start is due to his front-nine performance which included five birdies in his first six holes – a similar start to his third round last year where he birdied his first six. Fowler – who has found himself in the top five after the first round of each of the last four tournaments at TPC Scottsdale – birdied 12, eagled 13 and continued his strong push with a birdie on 17. Varner overcame an early bogey on the par-4 second with eight birdies in his first round including a 31-foot birdie putt in front of a packed house at 16.

Martin Laird and J.T. Poston are one shot off the lead at 6-under, and five players find themselves in a tie two shots off the leaders including two-time WM Phoenix Open runner-up Bubba Watson and Waste Management ambassador Charley Hoffman.

Pairings will be the same for Friday’s round with tee times starting at 7:20 a.m. Click below to see the full list of groupings.

See Highlights from Tuesday at the 2019 WM Phoenix Open

January 30, 2019 by WM Phoenix Open Leave a Comment

Tuesday at the Waste Management Phoenix Open is always full of fun for the young golfers in our community and the 2019 edition was no exception. More than 600 kids from local elementary schools were on hand for the R.S. Hoyt Jr. Family Foundation Dream Day benefiting The First Tee of Phoenix, skipping a morning at school to see sports stars, trick-shot artists and team mascots have a blast on the TPC Scottsdale Champions practice range. Arizona Diamondbacks flame-throwing relief pitcher Archie Bradley spoke about his past accomplishments and the perseverance – one of The First Tee of Phoenix’s CORE Values – required to achieve his goals. Chicago Cubs All-Star first baseman was also on-hand to speak to the kids and joke to Archie about his high batting average against his National League rival.

While the two ball players were trading jabs and imparting wisdom to the golf stars of tomorrow, PGA TOUR rookie and certified smasher of the golf ball Cameron Champ was sending drives into orbit. And afterwards, all in attendance were treated to a trick-shot golf show to end the day.

The fun kept going at 11 am at the TPC Scottsdale putting green for the San Tan Ford Special Olympics Open where Special Olympians and local business and community leaders competed in a friendly putting challenge.

Just after 12 p.m., officials from Title Sponsor Waste Management, the PGA TOUR and The Thunderbirds – hosts of the WM Phoenix Open – held a press conference to announce Waste Management’s title sponsorship of the “Greatest and Greenest Show on Grass” will continue through the 2030 tournament.

“We are excited about the future as we extend this great partnership with Waste Management for another 10 years,” said Carlos Sugich, Big Chief of The Thunderbirds. “Our partnership is one of the strongest on the PGA TOUR and proves a shared commitment to the game of golf, ongoing sustainability efforts at our event and benefiting children and families in need around our local communities.”

Tee times and pairings for Wednesday’s Annexus Pro-Am will be announced on www.wmphoenixopen.com Tuesday night. Some of the big names slated to play in the celebrity pro-am alongside the PGA TOUR’s best are Michael Phelps, Greg Maddux, Patrick Peterson, Justin Verlander, Archie Bradley, Anthony Rizzo, Jake Owen, Emmitt Smith and Golden Tate – to name just a few.

Don’t forget to stick around for the Phoenix Suns Charities Shot at Glory, a unique closest-to-the-pin contest for charity promising $1 million to anyone who can ace the par-3 16th hole in front of the largest crowd in golf.

We’ll see you tomorrow for another fun-filled day at The People’s Open!
