FIELD NOW BOASTS 6 OF THE TOP-10, 14 OF TOP-20 PLAYERS IN THE WORLD

“The People’s Open” field is shaping up to be one of the strongest in tournament history as World No. 4 Patrick Cantlay, World No. 12 Louis Oosthuizen, World No. 19 Harris English and World No. 43 Adam Scott are among the most recent players to commit to play in the 2022 [geoswitch][geoswitch_case country_code=”US” state_code=”AZ”]WM Phoenix Open Presented by Taylor Morrison[/geoswitch_case][geoswitch_case]WM Phoenix Open[/geoswitch_case][/geoswitch], which is set to tee it up Feb. 7-13 at TPC Scottsdale. The field now includes six players ranked in the Top-10, 14 of the Top-20 and half of the Top-50 in the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR).

“The Thunderbirds take tremendous pride in hosting a world-class field and this year is shaping up to be one of the best ever,” said 2022 Tournament Chairman Dr. Michael Golding. “We’re excited to welcome not only more than half of the Top-10 players in the world and half of the Top-50, but also former WM Phoenix Open champions, Major winners, FedExCup champions and, of course, the next crop of young PGA TOUR superstars in the making. During his 10-year professional career, Cantlay has pocketed six PGA TOUR victories, most of which came in a whirlwind 2020-2021 season. In last year’s wrap-around season, Cantlay picked up four of those six wins, including back-to-back FedExCup playoff wins (BMW Championship, TOUR Championship), a subsequent FedExCup Title and a $15 million season-long bonus. The incredible run landed him 2021 PGA TOUR Player of the Year honors as well. Cantlay is currently ranked No. 4 in the Official World Golf Rankings – second highest in the field after No. 1 Jon Rahm – and will make his first-ever appearance at the WM Phoenix Open this year.

Oosthuizen will be making his third start at TPC Scottsdale, a course he seems to like as he has finished solo third (2017) and T-11 (2021) in his previous two outings. The South African has nine European Tour titles to his name to go along with a Major championship victory at the 2010 Open Championship held at the Old Course, where he defeated Lee Westwood by seven shots. He had an outstanding 2020-21 season, carding four runner-up finishes, two third-place finishes and eight Top-10s to finish 14^th in the final FedExCup standings.

A four-time PGA TOUR winner, English has played in the last 10 WM Phoenix Open tournaments, carding four Top-25 finishes including a third-place finish in 2016. He is coming off arguably his best year on TOUR where he won two events – the Sentry Tournament of Champions and the Travelers Championship. He also placed third at the 2021 US Open – his highest finish in a Major Championship.

A 22-year PGA TOUR veteran and former World No. 1 golfer (2014 season), Scott has 14 PGA TOUR victories, 11 European Tour victories and 31 total professional wins under his belt that include a victory at the 2013 Masters to become the only Australian to win The Masters. Scott played in 19 PGA TOUR events last year making 17 cuts, with his best outing a runner-up finish at the Wyndham Championship.

The star-studded field now features 25 players ranked in the Top-50 of the Official World Golf Rankings, led by Jon Rahm who sits first in the standings and followed closely by Viktor Hovland at 3rd. The other top-ranked players include Cantlay (4), Justin Thomas (7), Xander Schauffele (8), Hideki Matsuyama (10), Oosthuizen (12), Sam Burns (13), Scottie Scheffler (14), Jordan Spieth (15), Tony Finau (17), Brooks Koepka (18), English (19), Abraham Ancer (20), Billy Horschel (24), Matt Fitzpatrick (25), Webb Simpson (30), Talor Gooch (33), Kevin Kisner (36), Max Homa (37), Russell Henley (40), Corey Conners (42), Scott (43), Lucas Herbert (44) and Seamus Power (50).

A field of 132 players will vie for the $8.2 million purse, the $1,476,000 first-place check, and 500 FedExCup points. PGA TOUR members have until 5 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 4, to commit to play in the WM Phoenix Open. Eligible players are assigned one of 34 PGA TOUR priority ranking categories based on their past performance on TOUR. The field will continue to change as players with higher priority rankings commit to play in the Open.

Patrick Peterson, CC Sabathia, Adam Thielen and Jared Goff Latest Additions to Play in Annexus Pro-Am at the 2022 WM Phoenix Open

Former Arizona Cardinals All-Pro cornerback Patrick Peterson, future Hall-of-Fame pitcher CC Sabathia, Minnesota Vikings Pro-Bowl receiver Adam Thielen and current Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff are among the next crop of celebrities who will be playing in the Annexus Pro-Am at the WM Phoenix Open on Wednesday, Feb. 9, at TPC Scottsdale’s Stadium Course.

Peterson spent 10 of 11 career NFL seasons in the Valley of the Sun, making eight-straight Pro-Bowl appearances from 2011-2018 for the Cardinals. He was named First-Team All-Pro three times (2011, 2013, 2015) and also named to the NFL’s 2010s All Decade Team and Sporting News’ 2010s All Decade Team. In 2021, Peterson signed with the Minnesota Vikings in free agency and played 13 games recording 45 tackles and one interception. Peterson is an avid golfer and a regular attendee of “The People’s Open” and the Annexus Pro-Am.

One of the most accomplished starting pitchers of the 21st century, Sabathia played 19 seasons for three MLB teams (Cleveland Guardians, Milwaukee Brewers, New York Yankees). He was named to the All-Star team six times (2003, 2004, 2007, 2010-2012), won the AL Cy Young Award in 2007, was awarded the ALCS MVP en route to a World Series title in 2009 with the New York Yankees and twice led Major League Baseball in wins (2009, 2010). Sabathia’s career wins total of 251 is the most ever for a pitcher who made his debut after 2000, and his 3,093 career strikeouts are good for 16th most all time and third most for any lefthanded pitcher in history.

Minnesota native Adam Thielen is a two-time Pro Bowl wide receiver who has spent every year of his nine-year professional career with his home-state Minnesota Vikings. Thielen currently ranks 7th on the Vikings all-time receiving yards list (5,966), 5th in receptions (464) and 5th in receiving touchdowns (49). In 2018, Thielen tied the record for most consecutive 100-yard receiving games (8) and broke the record for most consecutive games with 100+ receiving yards to begin a season (8) while going on to lead the NFL in both receptions and receiving yards for the year. Thielen will make his first appearance at the 2022 Annexus Pro-Am.

Two-time Pro Bowl quarterback Jared Goff will make his first appearance in the Annexus Pro-Am in 2022. Goff was highly touted as one of the most polished young pocket passers coming out of college and was drafted No. 1 overall in the 2016 NFL Draft to the Los Angeles Rams, a team he helped lead to the Super Bowl in 2018. In 2021, Goff was traded to the Detroit Lions where he threw for 3,245 yards, 19 touchdowns, and eight interceptions in 14 games. Goff also holds the NFL record for most passing completions in a regular season game (45 tied with Drew Bledsoe).

Pepperdine All-American Sahith Theegala Receives Third Sponsor Exemption for 2022 WM Phoenix Open

Tournament Chairman Dr. Michael Golding announced today three-time Pepperdine All-American and one of the PGA TOUR’s rising stars Sahith Theegala will receive the third of five available sponsor exemptions for the 2022 [geoswitch][geoswitch_case country_code=”US” state_code=”AZ”]WM Phoenix Open Presented by Taylor Morrison[/geoswitch_case][geoswitch_case]WM Phoenix Open[/geoswitch_case][/geoswitch], which is scheduled to be played February 7-13 at TPC Scottsdale. Theegala is off to a hot start in the 2021-2022 wrap-around season, posting one Top-10 finish (Sanderson Farms Championship) and two Top-25 finishes in nine events and is currently ranked 83^rd in the FedExCup standings. He finished T-25 at last week’s Farmers Insurance Open.

The first two 2022 WM Phoenix Open sponsor exemptions went to Arizona State University standout Preston Summerhays and former PGA Championship winner Jason Dufner. The remaining two invites will be announced leading up to the tournament.

Theegala had an extremely successful college career, winning four times during his tenure on his way to three-time NCAA All-American honors at Pepperdine. In 2020, Theegala swept Player-of-the-Year honors, taking home the Haskins Award, the Ben Hogan Award and the Jack Nicklaus Award – becoming only the fifth player in history to take home all three awards in the same year. Theegala – who secured his PGA TOUR card for the 2021-2022 season with consecutive Top-10 finishes in the Korn Ferry Tour finals, reached as high as No. 3 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings before turning professional in 2000.
