Thunderbirds Charities Donates More Than $2.5 Million To Valley Charities During Fall Funding Cycle

February 9, 2022 by WM Phoenix Open Leave a Comment

Thunderbirds Charities, the charitable giving arm of The Thunderbirds – hosts of the WM Phoenix Open – awarded more than $2.5 million in grants to 57 Valley charities during its 2021 Fall funding cycle. Some of the largest grants awarded were $300,000 to UMOM New Day Centers, $250,000 to A New Leaf, and $150,000 to St. Joseph the Worker. Other notable grants were awarded to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Arizona ($100,000), YWCA Metro Phoenix ($80,000), and Ryan House ($75,000).

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Arizona has a new permanent home in the heart of Central Phoenix and the $100,000 grant will be used to create the Thunderbirds Charities Community Room that will be used by staff, Big/Little matches activities, and other community events.

The recent $80,000 grant to YWCA will provide Senior Meals on Wheels in the West Valley and fund financial education programs to YWCA clients and those working with other like-minded charities.

Thunderbirds Charities’ grant of $75,000 to Ryan House will bolster their Sponsor-a-Stay program which offers short-term overnight respite care for parents and families of children who are medically fragile.

“Giving back to our local communities is by far the most rewarding thing we do as Thunderbirds,” said Scott Jenkins, Big Chief of The Thunderbirds. “The past two years have been extremely hard on nonprofit organizations and the people they serve. Now, more than ever, it’s

crucial to support these pivotal organizations and the vital work they conduct in our communities. We are grateful to be able to help in any way we can.”

Thunderbirds Charities has now opened its 2022 Spring funding cycle. Information on how to apply for a grant can be found at www.thunderbirdscharities.org.

In addition to Berger, Patrick Rodgers and Austin Eckroat were offered the final two sponsor exemptions, while Ben Silverman, Etienne Papineau and Jeffrey Kang earned the last three spots in the tournament through the Monday qualifier.

A WM Phoenix Open veteran, Berger will make his eighth consecutive start at TPC Scottsdale. The star-studded field now features 25 players ranked in the Top-50 of the Official World Golf Rankings, led by Jon Rahm who sits first in the standings and followed closely by Viktor Hovland at 3rd. The other top-ranked players include Patrick Cantlay (4), Justin Thomas (7), Xander Schauffele (8), Hideki Matsuyama (10), Louis Oosthuizen (12), Jordan Spieth (13), Sam Burns (14), Scottie Scheffler (15), Harris English (16), Abraham Ancer (17), Tony Finau (18), Berger (19), Brooks Koepka (20), Billy Horschel (22), Matt Fitzpatrick (25), Webb Simpson (30), Talor Gooch (33), Kevin Kisner (36), Max Homa (37), Russell Henley (40), Corey Conners (42), Lucas Herbert (44), Seamus Power (46) and Adam Scott (49).

A field of 132 players will vie for the $8.2 million purse, the $1,476,000 first-place check, and 500 FedExCup points. PGA TOUR members have until 5 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 4, to commit to play in the WM Phoenix Open.

Michael Phelps, Aaron Rodgers, Josh Duhamel, Walker Buehler and Reggie Bush Added to Star-Studded Field for Annexus Pro-Am at the 2022 WM Phoenix Open

February 7, 2022 by WM Phoenix Open Leave a Comment

The cast of athletes and celebs continues to grow for the Annexus Pro-Am as Michael Phelps, Aaron Rodgers, Josh Duhamel, Walker Buehler and Reggie Bush are the latest to join the fan-favorite Pro-Am at the WM Phoenix Open on Wednesday, Feb. 9, at TPC Scottsdale’s Stadium Course.

Phelps is considered the greatest Olympic athlete of all time thanks to his record 28 overall medals, including a record 23 gold medals. His most recent competitive appearance was at the Rio Summer Games in 2016 where he added six more medals, including five gold medals, to his record medal count. The Scottsdale resident will be making his seventh appearance in the Annexus Pro-Am (2013, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021).

One of the greatest NFL quarterbacks in the past 30 years, Rodgers has earned three NFL MVP awards (2011, 2014, 2020), a Super Bowl victory in 2011 and a Super Bowl MVP title. Among Rodgers’ NFL accolades are four First-Team All-Pro selections (2011, 2014, 2020, 2021), 10 Pro-Bowl appearances (2009, 2011, 2012, 2014-2016, 2018-2021) and an Associated Press Athlete of the year distinction in 2011. Rodgers twice led the NFL in passing touchdowns (2016, 2020), was the NFL’s completion percentage leader in 2020, was named to the NFL’s 2010’s All-Decade Team and holds the NFL record for highest passer rating in a season (2011), consecutive passes without an interception (402), lowest interception percentage in a season (2018) and best career touchdown to interception ratio (4.83). Rodgers ranks 10th all time in passing yards (55,360) and fifth all time in passing touchdowns (449).

Duhamel is an American actor and former fashion model. He made his acting debut as Leo du Pres on the ABC daytime soap opera All My Children and later starred as Danny McCoy on NBC’s Las Vegas. Duhamel has appeared in films such as Transformers: The Last Knight (2017), When in Rome (2010), Life as We Know It (2010), New Year’s Eve (2011), Safe Haven (2013), and You’re Not You (2014). Duhamel has also starred in two video games, most notably Call of Duty: WWII (2017). Most recently, he appeared in the romantic comedy-drama film Love, Simon (2018) and played Sheldon Sampson in the Netflix superhero series Jupiter’s Legacy (2021).

Walker Buehler was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers 24th overall in the 2015 draft just one year removed from his 2014 College World Series victory as a member of the Vanderbilt Commodores. Buehler was instrumental in the Dodgers 2020 World Series title, and a year later was named to the 2021 All-MLB first team. The two-time MLB All-Star pitcher has a 40-13 record with a 2.90 ERA and 632 strikeouts in five years.

Two-time All-American at USC and 11-year NFL veteran Reggie Bush will make his third appearance at the WM Phoenix Open’s Annexus Pro-Am (2018, 2020). Bush played for five NFL teams during his career, winning Super Bowl XLIV (2010) with the New Orleans Saints, was named a First-Team All-Pro selection in 2008 and was inducted into the Saints Hall of Fame in 2019.

THOMAS RHETT AND OLD DOMINION OFFICIALLY KICKED OFF THE PEOPLE’S OPEN AT FIRST-EVER CONCERT IN THE COLISEUM

The iconic 16th hole at TPC Scottsdale looked very different on Saturday night, though it hosted the same energetic, fun-loving crowd as always during the first Concert in the Coliseum.

Country sensations Thomas Rhett and Old Dominion starred on a massive stage, built specially for the show on the middle of the 16th fairway, with more than 10,000 fans singing and cheering along.

“For the past five years, we’ve been looking at (the 16th hole) as a music venue,” said Dr. Michael Golding, 2022 Tournament Chairman. “The Thunderbird Organization has always looked at this venue as a special place and our relationship with music at the Phoenix Open has always been in place.”

In its first year, the Concert in the Coliseum was created to add more fun to fans, who always bring passion and noise to the WM Phoenix Open presented by Taylor Morrison while cheering on PGA Tour players. With Rhett singing No. 1 hits like “What Your Country Song” and Old Dominion playing hit single “Some People Do,” the 16th hole may have been louder than ever.

Suffice to say, it was the perfect start to the People’s Open and a night that won’t soon be forgotten.

As Golding said best, “We are certain this will be a tradition for years to come.”

For those who missed out on the fun, tickets are still available for the Coors Light Birds Nest concert series that will take place Feb. 9-12 during the WM Phoenix Open. Featured artists include Diplo, Sam Hunt, Mackelmore and Kygo. For tickets and more information, click here.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
