Thunderbirds Charities Gives $3.85 Million to Valley Charities during Spring Funding Cycle

August 5, 2019 by WM Phoenix Open Leave a Comment

FALL FUNDING CYCLE IS NOW OPEN AT THUNDERBIRDSCHARITIES.ORG

Thunderbirds Charities, the charitable giving arm of The Thunderbirds – hosts of the [geoswitch][geoswitch_case country_code=”US” state_code=”AZ”]Waste Management Phoenix Open Presented by the Ak-Chin Indian Community[/geoswitch_case][geoswitch_case]Waste Management Phoenix Open[/geoswitch_case][/geoswitch] – awarded $3.85 million in grants to 65 Valley charities during its Spring 2019 funding cycle.  Most notably, Thunderbirds Charities granted $265,000 to Teach For America, $250,000 to VOS YMCA (Valley of the Sun), $200,00 to Maricopa Health Foundation, $100,000 to Teen Lifeline, and $100,000 to Homeless ID Project.

Additionally, Thunderbirds Charities announced it has now opened its 2019 fall funding cycle at www.ThunderbirdsCharities.org

“Giving back and providing much-needed support to children and families is the most fulfilling thing about what we do as tournament hosts,” said Chance Cozby, President of Thunderbirds Charities.  “We’re happy to provide these grants to deserving organizations around the Valley. It’s an honor to see how the funds raised  from the Waste Management Phoenix Open impacts those in need in our communities.”

The $265,000 donation to Teach For America will support local recruitment and training of 25 promising leaders in Phoenix. As a result of The Thunderbirds investment, the TFA Phoenix 2019 corps will increase educational access and opportunity for more than 5,700 students across the valley.

“I’m already so impressed with this group of leaders. They’re bright, ambitious and driven,” said TFA Regional Board Chair Jim Swanson. “With the support of Thunderbirds Charities, they will now have the opportunity to serve in the communities that need it the most, and to change the lives of students growing up in Arizona.”

The $250,000 donation to VOS YMCA will go towards Camp Sky-Y renovation; specifically renovation of cabin and bathhouse facilities and additional improvements to the camp experience that include a new pavilion, technology and creative arts centers, an updated ropes course, expansion of the dining hall, and an upgraded water system. This project also includes acquisition of 16 acres of National Forest Service land, doubling camper capacity so they can serve more than 3,000 children each year at Camp Sky-Y.

The $200,000 grant to Maricopa Health Foundation and Maricopa Integrated Health System (soon to be Valleywise Health) will help build a Family Learning Center in their new comprehensive health center in Peoria, scheduled to open next summer. Family Learning Centers are libraries for patients, their families and the community that provide health information, community referrals, classes, literacy activities and program enrollment assistance.

“We are incredibly grateful to Thunderbirds Charities for making the fifth MIHS Family Learning Center possible,” said Maricopa Health Foundation CEO Nate Lowrie. “Access to health education, children’s activities and parenting resources, all located in a community health clinic setting, is making a powerfully positive impact on the health and well-being of underserved families in the Valley.”

The $100,000 grant to Teen Lifeline supports the Teen Peer Counseling Hotline/Text Line, a free, confidential peer-supported hotline available to troubled teens 365 days a year to call or text in to receive support, counseling and resources. For every one in three teens that reach out, this call for help could be the difference between finding help and hope, or giving up.

“We have one goal at Teen Lifeline, to prevent teen suicide in Arizona,” said Nikki Kontz, Teen Lifeline Clinical Director. “We are incredibly grateful to Thunderbirds Charities for their incredible commitment to Arizona youth. It is only through working together we can reduce the rate of Teen Suicide in our state.”

The $100,000 donation towards the Homeless ID Project will help individuals and families to end their homelessness and rebuild their lives by providing the critical first step of identification replacement services. The need for replacement documents can result from loss, theft, eviction, or even fleeing a domestic violence situation.

“The Homeless ID Project is honored to receive this grant,” said Homeless ID Project Executive Director Rick Mitchell. “With this ongoing support from Thunderbirds Charities, we can help those seeking to end their homelessness to get a start on what can be a very difficult journey. A life rebuilt provides a real benefit to the person, to the family, and to our entire community as people reengage and become productive.”

PGA TOUR announces expanded schedule of 49 events for 2019-20 season

July 30, 2019 by WM Phoenix Open Leave a Comment

Waste Management Phoenix Open: Jan 27 – Feb 2, 2020

Via PGATOUR.com

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – The PGA TOUR today announced an expanded 2019-20 Season schedule of 49 FedExCup tournaments, featuring a dramatically changed opening segment and several late-season adjustments to accommodate the 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo.

The schedule reflects a net increase of three tournaments over the current season. 11 of the 46 Regular Season events will be conducted in the opening portion of the schedule between September-November. This segment includes two new tournaments in The ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP in Japan and the Bermuda Championship, plus the return of A Military Tribute at the Greenbrier and the Houston Open following one-year absences due to their transition from 2018 mid-season dates.

Later in the season, the TOUR will have an open week during the men’s Olympic competition (week of July 27-Aug. 2) before resuming with the Wyndham Championship and three FedExCup Playoffs events. Several changes also have been made leading up to the Olympics, most notably: the Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit moving one month earlier to late May; and the World Golf Championships-FedEx St. Jude Invitational and Barracuda Championship shifting from late July to the first week of the month, exchanging dates with the 3M Open in Blaine, Minn.

“After a very successful first year with our new schedule, we are thrilled to expand the number of events to 49 while maintaining a great flow from start-to-finish, allowing our fans to better engage and follow the TOUR throughout the season,” said PGA TOUR Commissioner Jay Monahan. “For the second year, we’re excited about kicking off the Season of Championships with THE PLAYERS in March, bookended by the FedExCup Playoffs in August, and the return of the Olympics in that window. As for the early-season portion of the schedule, our players grasp the importance of a strong start in the Race for the FedExCup and this has translated into growth and momentum for the events played in the fall.”

With the PGA TOUR season now ending in August at the TOUR Championship, the 2019-20 season will open the week of Sept. 9-15 with A Military Tribute at the Greenbrier. The Sanderson Farms Championship follows with its first-ever standalone date (Sept. 16-22), before the TOUR moves on to the Safeway Open, Shriners Hospitals for Children Open and Houston Open.

The TOUR then embarks on a three-tournament Asian swing, beginning Oct. 14-20 with THE CJ CUP @ NINE BRIDGES at Jeju Island, Korea. The ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP debuts at Accordia Golf Narashino Country Club in Chiba Prefecture Oct. 21-27, followed by the World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions in Shanghai, China, the week of Oct. 28-Nov. 3, which also marks the debut of the Bermuda Championship at Port Royal Golf Club in Southampton.

Following a week off, the TOUR continues the 2019 segment at the Mayakoba Golf Classic in Playa del Carmen, Mexico (Nov. 11-17) before concluding with The RSM Classic. While that marks the end of FedExCup competition until the first week of January 2020, the 13th Presidents Cup returns to The Royal Melbourne Golf Club in Australia the week of Dec. 9-15. It was there that the International Team claimed its lone victory over the U.S. Team in 1998.

Once the TOUR resumes in January in Hawaii, the scheduling sequence remains unchanged from the current season until the Rocket Mortgage Classic’s move from the last week of June to May 25-31. The next four weeks remain the same before the move of the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational and Barracuda Championship to June-29-July 5 and the 3M Open to July 20-26, the week before the Olympic competition.

Following the Olympic Games, the Regular Season wraps up at the Wyndham Championship (Aug. 3-9), where not only the FedExCup Playoffs field will be finalized, but the added drama of the season-long Wyndham Rewards Top 10 will be determined. Introduced this season, the $10 million competition caps the Regular Season by rewarding the 10 leaders in FedExCup points, with $2 million going to the winner.

Due to the off week for the Olympics, the FedExCup Playoffs will begin one week later and conclude the final week of August: THE NORTHERN TRUST Aug. 10-16; BMW Championship Aug. 17-23; and the TOUR Championship Aug. 24-30.

The FedExCup Playoffs wrap up the Season of Championships, which begins with THE PLAYERS Championship (March 9-15) and continues through the Masters Tournament (April 6-12); PGA Championship (May 11-17); U.S. Open (June 15-21); and The Open Championship (July 13-19).

Several new or familiar venues are included during this stretch, beginning with the PGA Championship visiting TPC Harding Park in San Francisco, the U.S. Open returning to Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, New York, and The Open Championship going to Royal St. George’s Golf Club in Sandwich, England.

Additionally, THE NORTHERN TRUST will be held for the first time in the Boston market at TPC Boston in Norton, Mass., while the BMW Championship will visit Olympia Fields Country Club in suburban Chicago.

Thunderbirds Charities Spotlight | Arizona Science Center

July 15, 2019 by WM Phoenix Open Leave a Comment

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_video link=”https://youtu.be/Foiph9JAGZ8″][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]The Arizona Science Center‘s CREATE Program builds a science and engineering foundation where children of all ages can experience hands-on learning in an interactive space. It teaches collaboration and inspires creativity for the young people in our communities and introduces them to STEM careers and college and career pathways to build a better future.

“Our family has been a member of AZ science center for three or four years now,” said Ian Swiergol, The Thunderbirds. “So as a Thunderbird, it means so much to me that our group is giving back so much to the community, especially in the field of science and technology.”

Thunderbirds Charities recently donated funds to help bolster CREATE at the AZ Science center which will help them take their incredible learning space into schools where children can learn the importance of fun and interesting things like laser cutting and the accompanying computer programming.

“It’s all about inspiring the next generation of scientists and engineers who are going to do amazing things,” said Sari Custer, chief curiosity officer & chief scientist, Arizona Science Center. “It’s advancements in medicine. Advancements in space science. It’s the kids that are learning today that are going to take us there again. And that wouldn’t be possible without donations from Thunderbirds Charities.”[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Gary Woodland’s Win at U.S. Open Inspired By Amy Bockerstette

Amy Bockerstette and Woodland have been friends since their special encounter at the 2019 WM Phoenix Open where they played the famed 16th hole together. After Woodland’s win at Pebble Beach, they sat down together on NBC’s The TODAY show to talk about life, their friendship and Amy’s “you can do this” attitude that’s taking the nation by storm.

“We had a special day there in Phoenix and it’s blossomed from there, but the world needs a lot more of Amy,” said Woodland on TODAY. “Her attitude, her energy is contagious. I thought a lot about you (speaking to Amy) on Sunday. I think a lot about you every day, so thank you.”[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
