Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton today joined The Thunderbirds, hosts of the Waste Management Phoenix Open and the PGA TOUR Wives Association to pack bags full of food for students at Nevitt Elementary School as part of the fourth annual “Blessings in a Backpack Day” – a nationwide effort to combat childhood hunger that was declared by the United States Conference of Mayors.

There have been a number of changes at the Phoenix Art Museum under the leadership of Amanda Cruz and her team, starting with the Teen Engagement Initiative, a program that offers a community alternative for safe programming for teenagers and a place to hang out and express themselves. Thunderbirds Charities, the charitable giving arm of the Thunderbirds – hosts of the Waste Management Phoenix – awarded more than $2.9 million in grants to 55 Valley charities during its spring funding cycle. Most notably, Thunderbirds Charities granted $300,000 to UMOM New Day Centers, $250,000 to VOS YMCA, $150,000 to Special Olympics Arizona (SOAZ) and $80,000 to Desert Voices Oral Learning Center.

The Thunderbirds want to congratulate all of the participants in the Special Olympics Arizona Summer Games. More than 1,300 athletes competed in a number of different events, including Athletics (Track & Field), Powerlifting, and Volleyball. The three-day event also included an Olympic-style opening ceremonies, torch run, parade of athletes and victory dance. The Special Olympics Summer Games are one of our favorite events of the year, and one that The Thunderbirds are proud to be a partner with.
