Thunderbirds Charities has been supportive of Fresh Start Women’s Foundation for more than 10 years and recently gifted $280,000 to help with major renovations to the Women’s Resource Center in downtown Phoenix.  Fresh Start serves more than 5,000 women in need each year and provides them with education, resources and support to positively transform their lives. It’s helping women to create stronger communities and families.

Funds to help improve water safety programs and afterschool camps.

PHOENIX, Ariz. – Thunderbirds Charities, the charitable giving arm of The Thunderbirds – hosts of the [geoswitch][geoswitch_case country_code=”US” state_code=”AZ”]Waste Management Phoenix Open Presented by Ak-Chin Indian Community[/geoswitch_case][geoswitch_case]Waste Management Phoenix Open[/geoswitch_case][/geoswitch] – announced a $250,000 contribution to the Valley of the Sun YMCA to support the Y’s Water Safety, Day Camp, Afterschool and Resident Camp Quality Improvement and Outreach Enhancements.

“We value our long standing relationship with Valley of the Sun YMCA and applaud the organization’s 125 years of impacting communities and enhancing lives, no matter their background or financial situation,” said Andy Markham, President of Thunderbirds Charities. “We are pleased to support the work of the Y as they teach youth and families lifesaving information about water safety and how to swim, and serve children and teens through summer resident and day camp programs throughout this community.”

This month’s Charity spotlight focuses on Girls on the Run, a program for girls in grades 3rd – 8th that helps to inspire participants to recognize their inner strength and celebrate what makes them one of a kind.  Trained coaches lead small teams through the research-based curricula which includes dynamic discussions, activities and running games.

Over the course of the 10-week program, the girls develop essential skills to help them navigate their worlds and establish a lifetime appreciation for health and fitness.  The program culminates with girls positively impacting their communities through a service project and being physically and emotionally prepared to complete a celebratory 5K event.

Thunderbirds Charities has donated money to this wonderful program the last two years, and we love watching the girls grow throughout the program.  Take a look at the August Charity Spotlight video for an inside look at Girls on the Run.

Most notably, Thunderbirds Charities granted $300,000 to UMOM New Day Centers, $250,000 to VOS YMCA, $150,000 to Special Olympics Arizona (SOAZ) and $80,000 to Desert Voices Oral Learning Center.

“As a community partner, The Thunderbirds have diligently supported Special Olympics Arizona in our efforts to bring all persons with intellectual disabilities and closely-related developmental disabilities into the larger society where they are accepted, respected, and given the chance to become useful and productive citizens,” said Tim Martin, Executive Director of Special Olympics Arizona. “The Thunderbird’s outstanding commitment to our organization extends beyond dollar donations, with generous in-kind support for events, partnering with law enforcement agencies in support of SOAZ, and a continuing enthusiasm to partner with Special Olympics Arizona on campaigns supporting our organization.”

The donation to UMOM assists the families and youth client assistance program to help end homelessness.

“This extraordinary and generous gift provides critical resources for families, as well as the youth we’re now caring for through the former Tumbleweed programs,” said UMOM New Day Centers CEO Darlene Newsom. “The best part of working with The Thunderbirds is the fact that we’re building on a relationship that goes back decades. Since the mid-1990s, they’ve consistently given us a big boost on projects of all sizes – everything from opening an emergency shelter to supporting our new family facility to underwriting critical improvements like flooring and lighting in several of our facilities. We are deeply grateful for their unfailing commitment to the priorities we share.”

The gift to VOS YMCA helps support their water safety program and its day and afterschool camps, and the award to Desert Voices Learning Center was used for their Toddler Room program.

The Thunderbirds have had a long-lasting partnership with Girl Scouts — Arizona Cactus-Pine (GSACPC) and have supported many of the organization’s wonderful projects and initiatives.  Most recently, The Thunderbirds and Thunderbirds Charities donated $125,000 to support Family Engagement Efforts in the South Phoenix community at the Leadership Center for Girls and Women at South Mountain.

“It’s really important for groups like The Thunderbirds to invest in girls because we know that the more we engage young women and adult women in civic engagement the healthier our communities are going to be,” said Tamara Woodbury, CEO of Girls Scouts – Arizona Cactus-Pine.  “This center does not only serve all girls in Arizona, but it makes a statement in a area like South Phoenix that this community is important to this state.”

The Leadership Center, which is located on 14.5 acres in the South Mountain community on Dobbins road in Phoenix, increases the local council’s capacity to serve more girls with relevant programming, from aquatics to STEM, all year long. The center is also fully ADA accessible.

“It really puts it into perspective once you get onsite and see the facilities and see the girls interacting, laughing and having fun,” said Chance Cozby, Thunderbird and Assistant Chairman for the 2018 Waste Management Phoenix Open.

“When you say The Thunderbirds have supported your project, that then helps other people believe in your project.,” Woodbury said.
