2024 WM PHOENIX OPEN AND THE THUNDERBIRDS RAISE A RECORD $17.5 MILLION FOR ARIZONA CHARITIES

May 22, 2024 by WM Phoenix Open Leave a Comment

The Thunderbirds – hosts of the WM Phoenix Open – announced the 2024 edition of “The People’s Open” raised a tournament record $17.5 million ($17,521,024) for Arizona charities.  This marks the seventh time in tournament history The Thunderbirds and the WM Phoenix Open have raised more than $10 million for charity in a single tournament.  The previous record was set last year ($14.5 million).

“Thunderbirds Charities and The Thunderbirds are proud to announce this record-breaking charitable donation exceeding $17.5 million from the 2024 WM Phoenix Open that will benefit Arizona charities,” said 2024 Tournament Chairman George Thimsen. “The WM Phoenix Open is a key philanthropic event that directly impacts organizations who support those in need, reflecting our ongoing commitment to the Arizona community. The hard work and collaboration with our city and state leaders, PGA TOUR players, sponsors, vendors, volunteers and enthusiastic fans has led to this enormously positive impact on our communities.”

The Thunderbirds and the WM Phoenix Open have now raised more than $142 million ($142,112,248) since 2010 when WM was named title sponsor, and more than $208 million ($208,158,814) for Arizona Charities in its 89-year history as one of the five longest-running events on the PGA TOUR.  In the last nine years alone, the tournament has raised more than $105 million.

“Congratulations to The Thunderbirds on their record-breaking donation to Arizona charities from the 2024 WM Phoenix Open,” said Scott Bradley WM Four Corners Area Vice President. “In the 15 years WM has served as title sponsor, The Thunderbirds and the WM Phoenix Open have raised more than $142 million for local charities, in turn making our community a better place for all residents.”

The announcement was made at the new Thunderbirds Charities Pediatric Burn Unit within the Diane and Bruce Halle Arizona Burn Center – Valleywise Health. Valleywise Health Foundation, a longtime charity partner of The Thunderbirds and Thunderbirds Charities, provides philanthropic support to Valleywise Health programs, education, research, and capital improvement projects. Valleywise Health (VH), Arizona’s only public teaching healthcare system serving all regardless of their ability to pay (more than 70 percent of VH patients are financially vulnerable), serves Arizona’s most critical healthcare needs by providing exceptional care, without exception, every patient, every time.

Thunderbirds Charities most recent donation of $500,000 went to Valleywise Health Foundation’s ALL IN Campaign that supports program and patient needs and helps augment voter-approved bonds designated solely for renovating and rebuilding aging facilities.  The Halle Arizona Burn Center and Thunderbirds Charities Pediatric Burn Unit is set to open this June. Treating some of the most complex and traumatic burn and wound cases, the Diane and Bruce Halle Arizona Burn Center at Valleywise Health is one of the nation’s largest and busiest academic burn centers with approximately 7,000 outpatient visits and more than 1,000 inpatient admissions each year. The new 75,000 square-foot Halle Arizona Burn Center will be a state-of-the-art facility, the epitome of excellence in burn care.

“Thanks to a generous gift from Thunderbirds Charities, the new Thunderbirds Charities Pediatric Burn Unit will be a safe space for children to heal, work through the trauma associated with their injuries, and get back to being a kid. This truly meaningful gift will help children and families for generations to come”, said Kate Fassett, Chief Advancement Officer for Valleywise Health Foundation.

“This long-standing partnership between Valleywise Health and Thunderbirds Charities is so special to us, and we’re immensely grateful for the more than $1.1 million Thunderbirds Charities has given Valleywise Health since 2010,” said Lia Christensen, Chief Administrative Officer at Valleywise Health.

THE THUNDERBIRDS AND WM PHOENIX OPEN GIVE BACK TO ST. MARY’S FOOD BANK FOLLOWING 2024 EDITION OF “THE PEOPLE’S OPEN”

March 18, 2024 by WM Phoenix Open Leave a Comment

Giving back to the community is a major focus each and every year for the WM Phoenix Open and tournament hosts The Thunderbirds, and they gave back once again to one of their longtime charity partners, St. Mary’s Food Bank, after the conclusion of the 2024 edition of “The People’s Open.”

On Tuesday of WM Phoenix Open week (Feb. 6), The Thunderbirds partnered with the PGA TOUR Wives Association to host the PGA TOUR Wives Golf Classic.  This friendly competition featured TOUR Wives competing in a 9-hole shootout for charity while their PGA TOUR pro husbands served as caddies for the day – carrying golf bags, raking bunkers and tending pin flags.  This year the PGA TOUR Wives Classic raised $40,000 for St. Mary’s Food Bank, which is the equivalent to 200,000 meals for those in need.

Additionally, The Thunderbirds and PGA TOUR Wives Association volunteered at St. Mary’s Food Bank on Wednesday of tournament week (Feb. 7), a visit that resulted in the packing of hundreds of emergency food boxes and a collaboration with “Big Ass Fans”, who also volunteered and stepped up by gifting two of their giant fans that will help keep St. Mary’s Food Bank volunteers cool in summer months.

Following the tournament, The Thunderbirds also donated all unused non-alcoholic beverages to St. Mary’s Food Bank, which took three semi-truck loads to deliver and weighed in at more than 240,000 pounds.

“The WM Phoenix Open, The Thunderbirds, and the PGA TOUR Wives are synonymous with giving back to the community. St. Mary’s Food Bank is so grateful for their continued support,” said Milt Liu, President and CEO. “Their donations of meals, beverages, and Big Ass Fans will have a lasting impact. This comes at a great time, too. More neighbors than ever before are leaning on the Food Bank to survive. The Thunderbirds and the golfing community always ask, ‘How can we help?’ We can’t thank them enough for their assistance in the fight against hunger.”

The Thunderbirds have been longtime supporters of St. Mary’s Food Bank, and most recently, over the last 10 years, have donated more than $1.3 million to the food bank.  Those grants have provided nourishment to children and families in need in many ways, from assisting in the expansion of after-school Kids Cafe Program to bolstering the School Pantry Program across metro Phoenix and rural Arizona.  Additionally, in 2020 during the height of the COVID pandemic, The Thunderbirds provided $100,000 to St. Mary’s Food Bank at a crucial time of need to help facilitate food distribution amidst widespread closures.

“Without a doubt, giving back to our communities is the most rewarding thing about what we do as tournament hosts,” said Pat Williams, Big Chief of The Thunderbirds and President of Thunderbirds Charities.  “We’re so grateful for our partners at St. Mary’s Food Bank and the PGA TOUR Wives Association for their dedication and assistance to help those in need.”

WHEATON ENNIS AND LENA DURETTE TAKE HOME TOP HONORS IN THUNDERBIRD INVITATIONAL AT PAPAGO GOLF CLUB

March 13, 2024 by WM Phoenix Open Leave a Comment

The Thunderbird Invitational came to a close last weekend and crowned winners in two different divisions after two days of intense competition at Papago Golf Club. Wheaton Ennis (Litchfield Park) took home top honors in the Men’s Championship Division, while Lena Durette (Scottsdale) was the overall winner in the Girl’s Championship Division to earn her first JGAA victory since 2019.

The field featured 82 of Arizona’s best junior golfers (54 boys and 28 girls) ranging in age from 13-18 to compete in the third PING Junior Masters Series tournament on the 2024 JGAA schedule. The PING Junior Masters Series consists of five tournaments held at some of the most prestigious courses in Arizona.

“We couldn’t be happier with how the Thunderbird Invitational turned out this year,” said Scott McNevin, Executive Director of JGAA. “Congratulations to our winners and thank you to The Thunderbirds and Papago Golf Club for hosting an incredible tournament!”

The first-round action of the Thunderbird Invitational began March 9 with Ennis getting off to a hot start with a 4-under 32 on the front nine en route to a first-round 68. He started out the final round a bit shaky with two bogeys in the first four holes but managed to pull away from the group after a noteworthy eagle on the par-5 10th hole. The momentum was in his favor after sinking that eagle putt and he finished the back nine at 2-under par to wrap up the tournament at 6-under (68-70-138).

The future Texas A&M Aggie is putting together a solid start to the 2024 season, with a runner up finish at the Warren Schutte Invitational and now his first title of the year. Ennis is nationally ranked inside the Top-5 at fourth in the current Rolex AJGA Rankings. 2023 JGAA Player of the Year Owen Bolles of Chandler and future University of San Diego Torero Henry Dall of Scottsdale ended up tied for second place at 4-under par, while Ajay Morris of Avondale, Ethan Butters of Chandler and Tyler Anderson of Phoenix all tied for fourth place at 3-under par.

Durette, who competed in the PGA TOUR Champions’ PURE Insurance Championship at Pebble Beach last year, showed dominate consistency throughout the weekend in the Girls Championship division. The emergence of Durette came out in full force after posting the only final-round score in red figures with five birdies on the way to a 1-under 71. She stayed consistent throughout the event after carding back-to-back rounds in the low 70s (72-71) to win by an impressive five strokes. The victory marks her first in the JGAA Girls Championship division and first overall win since 2019.

Jayden Jevnick out of Cave Creek took solo second after finishing at 4-over par with rounds of 74-74. Former JGAA Girls Player of the Year Alexis Vakasiuola of San Tan Valley and Kaitlyn Helm of Litchfield Park tied for third place at 5-over par.

Debuting in 2015, the PING Junior Masters Series is a series of invitation-only tournaments tailored to Arizona junior golfers with the desire and ability to compete locally against their top-ranked peers. The field for the events is limited to junior golfers who are invited to compete by their national ranking by Junior Golf Scoreboard – boys must be in the top 3,500 and girls in the top 1,500. The Thunderbird Invitational, the third tournament in the esteemed PING Junior Masters Series, gathers top-tier high school junior golfers statewide to showcase their skills on a prestigious stage. Proudly sponsored and backed by The Thunderbirds, organizers, and charitable arm of the WM Phoenix Open, this event has enjoyed three decades of support and memories.

The Thunderbirds are big supporters of junior golf in the Valley and have had a longstanding partnership with the JGAA. They have hosted a number of junior golf tournaments including events like The Thunderbird Invitational, The Thunderbird International, The Thunderbird High School Senior Classic and others.

THUNDERBIRDS AND WM PHOENIX OPEN ANNOUNCE SATURDAY TICKET REFUND PLAN

February 16, 2024 by WM Phoenix Open Leave a Comment

For nearly a century, the WM Phoenix Open has hosted some of the greatest golfers in the world and the most enthusiastic and passionate fans in all of professional sports.  The community support of this special week each year has allowed The Thunderbirds as tournament hosts to raise more than $190 million for Arizona charities.

Last week, we encountered among the most difficult conditions in the history of the event, as heavy rain on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday morning contributed to a significant deterioration in the conditions at TPC Scottsdale. This rainfall made a large percentage of the 190-acre golf course unusable by our fans and created significant operational challenges for the tournament.  When these conditions created congestion throughout the golf course on Saturday, the decision was made to temporarily close the main entrance and end concession sales so that we could provide a pathway for fans to safely exit the golf course.

We understand the frustration that this caused for our fans. Those fans who purchased a ticket and were denied entrance on Saturday can request a refund by emailing orders@wmphoenixopen.com. A dedicated team will be available to respond to inquiries and answer any questions. The deadline to submit a ticket refund request is March 31, 2024.

As for the future, we are aware that changes need to be made and we will spend the upcoming months identifying those areas where change is necessary. Not just for Friday and Saturday, but for the entire week.

The Thunderbirds are motivated and constantly looking to make the WM Phoenix Open experience better, ensuring the future success of this tournament for the fans and our community for years to come.

NICK TAYLOR WINS 2024 WM PHOENIX OPEN

February 12, 2024 by WM Phoenix Open Leave a Comment

The 2024 WM Phoenix Open has come to an exciting end with thousands of golf fans once again pushing off the Super Bowl to see who would be crowned the 2024 WM Phoenix Open champion. Finding the winner’s circle for the fourth time in his PGA TOUR career was Nick Taylor who raced darkness to best Charley Hoffman in a two-hole, sudden-death playoff.

The bookends of Taylor’s tournament were certainly worth celebrating. Taylor of course tied the TPC Scottsdale course record (60) in his first round before raising the Crystal Thunderbird trophy after firing a bogey-free 65 in his fourth round.

Taylor recorded three birdies in a row on No. 18. Once to force the playoff in regulation, and then twice more in each of the two playoff holes. With the win, Taylor earned $1,584,000 and 500 FedExCup points to move to fourth in the yearlong standings.

The 2024 edition of “The People’s Open” is a redemption story of sorts for Taylor who avenged his 2023 WM Phoenix Open runner-up finish to Scottie Scheffler just a year prior.

On behalf of The Thunderbirds, title sponsor WM and the PGA TOUR, the WM Phoenix Open would like to extend an enormous thank you to our volunteers and, of course, the very best fans in golf. Thank you for an outstanding tournament! We’ll see you next year at “The People’s Open!”
