Wear Green to The Open – Waste Management Phoenix Open’s “Green Out” is Saturday, February 4
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – The Waste Management Phoenix Open’s seventh annual GREEN OUT is set for Saturday, February 4 during the third round. The tournament host Thunderbirds and title sponsor Waste Management encourage all fans attending the tournament to wear something green to honor and support the sustainability initiatives of the tournament.
For every person who wears GREEN on Saturday, February 4, the tournament host Thunderbirds will donate some green to three deserving non-profit organizations with a sustainability focus. Now in its seventh year, the Green Out has raised $390,000 for a variety of local non-profit environmental organizations. This year’s recipients include AZ Recycling Coalition, AZ Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA), and Change the Course water restoration campaign to northern Arizona rivers and the Lower Colorado River Basin.
The Waste Management Phoenix Open is not only the highest-attended tournament on the PGA TOUR, it is also the most sustainable sporting event in the world. For four straight years, 100 percent of the waste generated at the tournament has been repurposed for beneficial reuse. Zero waste has been sent to landfills as all aluminum cans, plastic bottles, cups and containers, all event signage, etc. have either been reused, recycled, composted or recovered for energy. In 2017, Waste Management is expected to make it five consecutive zero waste events.
“It’s a remarkable accomplishment, with more than 600,000 fans attending the tournament last year that Waste Management is able to make this is a zero waste event,” said 2017 Waste Management Phoenix Open Tournament Chairman Andy Markham. “Our partners at Waste Management do an incredible job of making this the greenest and most sustainable sporting event in the world. We encourage everyone attending the tournament’s third round to participate by wearing something green – a shirt, hat, shorts or pants.”
The 2017 Waste Management Phoenix Open, also known as “The Greatest Show on Grass,” and “The People’s Open”, will be held Jan. 30 – Feb 5, 2017, at TPC Scottsdale. The Waste Management Phoenix Open is the best-attended golf tournament in the world and has gained legendary status for being the most unique stop on the PGA TOUR. Last year’s tournament broke three attendance records, including a PGA TOUR record 618,365 fans for the week. The 2017 edition will mark the 82nd playing of the event (one of the five oldest events on the PGA TOUR) and the eighth as the Waste Management Phoenix Open.
