Dubbed “The Greatest Show on Grass,” The WM Phoenix Open at TPC Scottsdale has no problem living up to its name. In addition to playing host to the greatest players in the game, the tournament is the PGA TOUR’s best attended event – drawing nearly 500,000 enthusiastic spectators each year.
As one of the first events on the PGA TOUR calendar, The WM Phoenix Open kicks off the year with a bang. Unlike any other tournament in the world, spectators become central to the event – helping to transform the famous 16th hole into “The Coliseum” – and the loudest hole in golf.
Formerly known as The Phoenix Open and The FBR Open, the event has been hosted by TPC Scottsdale Stadium Course since 1987. The tournament benefits The Phoenix Thunderbirds – one of the region’s most prominent charities – and helps to generate millions of dollars in donations to the area’s most deserving organizations annually.

Renovation of TPC Scottsdale’s Stadium Course
The City of Scottsdale underwent an extensive renovation of TPC Scottsdale’s Stadium golf course and clubhouse on April 1, 2014. The golf course project, led by architect Tom Weiskopf, included the relocation of four greens, resurfacing of all greens, reshaping and regrassing of all tee complexes, relocation and reshaping of all bunker complexes, replacement of cart paths, and re-landscaping of desert areas.
The redesign resulted in strategic changes on all 18 holes. Easily recognizable changes are the new green locations on holes 2,3,4 and 14 and significant fairway and green complex modifications to hole 13. The renovated bunkers feature white sand, which will add a dramatic new look to the course, while more than 250 trees were planted for both strategic and aesthetic value. The result is a golf course that’s more aesthetically pleasing to resort guests and strategically more challenging to PGA TOUR players during the WM Phoenix Open.
The clubhouse renovation, under the direction of architect firm Allen & Philp, included additional locker room and meeting space, and interior upgrades to the entire facility. Construction of both the clubhouse and golf course were completed in November of 2014.
