ASU SUN DEVILS MEN’S GOLF TEAM TAKES HOME TEAM AND INDIVIDUAL HONORS AT THUNDERBIRD COLLEGIATE
The 51st annual Thunderbird Collegiate wrapped up last weekend at Papago Golf Club, with Arizona State University once again coming out on top taking home both the team and individual titles on its home turf. This is the third straight year the ASU men’s team has swept this annual collegiate golf tournament sponsored by The Thunderbirds by winning both the team and individual titles.
ASU sophomore Fifa Laopakdee finished at 12-under par and claimed medalist honors after outlasting New Mexico’s Caron Herron in a playoff, continuing ASU’s dominant run of four consecutive individual titles at the event. Among those previous winners include 2022 WM Phoenix Open sponsor exemption Preston Summerhays who won in 2023 and 2024. Summerhays finished in third place at 11-under par, just one shot off joining Laopakdee and Herron in the playoff.
The Sun Devils put on a show from start to finish, delivering a record-breaking team score of 39-under par to win by a commanding 12 shots. It marks the 23rd time ASU has taken home the Thunderbird Collegiate trophy—and their first three-peat since 2017–2019.
Proudly supported by The Thunderbirds – hosts of the WM Phoenix Open – this event has enjoyed five decades of support and memories. This tournament is considered by many as the “WM Phoenix Open of Collegiate Golf.” Players like Bobby Clampett, Corey Pavin, Dan Forsman, Howard Twitty, Jim Carter, Notah Begay, Phil Mickelson, Steve Jones, Tiger Woods, Tom Purtzer and a host of others have participated in this illustrious event.
Proceeds from the tournament benefit the men’s and women’s golf programs at Arizona State University. The Thunderbirds are big supporters of collegiate golf in the Valley and have had a longstanding partnership with Sun Devil Athletics.
