World No. 4 Justin Thomas, No. 16 Bryson DeChambeau Latest Additions to 2020 Waste Management Phoenix Open
Tournament Chairman Tim Woods announced today 12-time PGA TOUR winner Justin Thomas and five-time TOUR winner Bryson DeChambeau are the latest to commit to the Waste Management Phoenix Open field, which will tee it up Jan. 27 – Feb. 2 at TPC Scottsdale. Additionally, five-time PGA TOUR winner Billy Horschel also committed to play in “The People’s Open”.
All three are currently ranked in the Top-50 of the Official World Golf Rankings, with Thomas leading the way at 4, followed by DeChambeau at 16 and Horschel at 36.
Thomas is coming off a win last week at the Sentry Tournament of Champions for his 12th career victory, the most wins by any active player under 30 on the PGA TOUR. He’s off to a hot start to the 2019-20 season, with two wins and three Top-5s, holding the top spot in the current FedExCup standings. His 2019 campaign was one of his best – he notched a win (BMW Championship), a runner-up finish, a third-place finish and seven Top-10s to finish third in the final FedExCup standings. This will be Thomas’ sixth appearance at the Waste Management Phoenix Open, with his best outing a T3 finish last year.
DeChambeau is coming off a solid 2019 PGA TOUR season where he finished 12th in the final FedExCup standings by carding five Top-10 finishes and making the cut in 17 of 21 appearances including his fifth PGA TOUR victory at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in Las Vegas. Known for his unique swing path and single-length clubs, DeChambeau will make his second start at the WM Phoenix Open – he finished T5 in 2018 in his first trip to TPC Scottsdale.
Horschel, the 2014 FedExCup champion, has made seven appearances at the Waste Management Phoenix Open, with his best finish a T11 in his first start in 2013. He finished T39 last year at TPC Scottsdale.
Currently the field has 14 players ranked in the Top-50 of the Official World Golf Rankings, led by Jon Rahm who sits 3rd in the standings. The other top-ranked players include Thomas (4), Xander Schauffele (8), Webb Simpson (11), Gary Woodland (14), DeChambeau (16), Hideki Matsuyama (21), Rickie Fowler (22), Kevin Na (27), Sungjae Im (35), Horschel (36), Chez Reavie (37), Byeong Hun An (44) and Brandt Snedeker (47).
The field also includes 21 of the Top-30 in the current FedExCup standings, along with 10 players who finished in the Top-25 in last year’s FedExCup race.
A total of 132 players will vie for the $7.3 million purse, the $1,314,000 first-place check and 500 FedExCup points. PGA TOUR members have until 5 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 24, to commit to play in the Waste Management Phoenix Open. Eligible players are assigned one of 34 PGA TOUR priority ranking categories based on their past performance on TOUR. The field will continue to change as players with higher priority rankings commit to play in the Open.
The 2020 Waste Management Phoenix Open will be held at TPC Scottsdale January 27 – February 2, 2020. “The People’s Open” was recently named the Tournament of the Year by the PGA TOUR for 2019, an honor that has been awarded four times in the last six years (2014, 2015, 2018, 2019) to help the tournament gain legendary status for being one the most unique events in golf. The 2020 edition will mark the 85th playing of the event (one of the five oldest events on the PGA TOUR) and the 11th as the Waste Management Phoenix Open.
