Webb Simpson Finds the Winner’s Circle at The People’s Open

February 3, 2020 by WM Phoenix Open Leave a Comment

The 2020 Waste Management Phoenix Open has come to an exciting end with thousands of golf fans once again pushing off the Super Bowl to see who would be crowned The People’s Open Champion. After finishing in second place to 2017 champion Hideki Matsuyama in a four-hole playoff, Webb Simpson now finds himself in the TPC Scottsdale winner’s circle after yet another thrilling sudden-death playoff against perennial contender Tony Finau. Simpson, who won the 2012 U.S. Open, now has six wins on the PGA TOUR, with his most victory coming at the 2018 Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass.

Simpson started Sunday’s round in the final group at 15-under par just one shot back of the leader, Tony Finau. A birdie on four allowed Simpson to take a share of the lead before it was quickly erased by a bogey on seven. Finau had birdies on 12 and 13 to take a two-stroke lead going into the TPC Scottsdale “Stadium Stretch” but couldn’t convert birdie putts on any of the final five holes. Simpson’s birdies on 17 and 18 forced a playoff with Finau who found the bunker off the tee on the first playoff hole, where Simpson made three-straight birdie putts (17, 18 and first playoff hole) to win his first PGA TOUR title in two years.

“I knew after Thursday I was going to have to put together a few good rounds and I was able to do that, Friday and Saturday,” said Simpson. “Today was a lot different. Today played tougher. And thankfully, I birdied the last two to have a chance and then repeated in the playoff. So, it feels great. It’s been a year and a half since THE PLAYERS, which is a long time, but it feels great.”

On behalf of The Thunderbirds, title sponsor Waste Management and the PGA TOUR, the Waste Management Phoenix Open would like to extend an enormous thank you to our volunteers and, of course, the very best fans in golf. Thank you for an outstanding tournament! Stay tuned for the Sunday highlights, and we’ll see you next year at The People’s Open!

Finau Captures Lead, Thunderbirds Raise $14 Million for Arizona Charities

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1580606899322{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]The sun has set on TPC Scottsdale after Saturday’s sunny third-round action at the 2020 Waste Management Phoenix Open. Tony Finau vaulted his way back up the leaderboard to finish with the lead in hand thanks to a bogey-free 9-under-par round including seven birdies and an eagle. Finau is nearly blemish-free this week, his only bogey coming on the par-3 4th during his first round. It’s anyone’s tournament going into Sunday’s final round with 14 players within six strokes of Finau.

Tournament Chairman Tim Woods was excited to announce today the 2020 Waste Management Phoenix Open will raise more than $14 million for Arizona charities, breaking the single-year charitable donation amount from just last year ($13.2 million). This is the ninth-consecutive year breaking the tournament record of charitable dollars raised in a single year.

The Thunderbirds and Waste Management Phoenix Open have raised more than $95 million for local charities since 2010 when Waste Management became title sponsor. In the WM Phoenix Open history dating back to 1932, the Phoenix Open has raised more than $161 million for local charities.[/vc_column_text][vc_video link=”https://youtu.be/dpYGa4tfAf0″][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1580606888061{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]Players, caddies, volunteers and thousands of fans covered TPC Scottsdale in green for Waste Management’s 10th-annual GREEN OUT day to show support for Waste Management’s commitment to environmental sustainability. In total, The Thunderbirds raised $42,500 each for four environmentally focused charities: Change the Course, Waste Not, the Arizona Recycling Coalition and Arizona Solid Waste Association of North America (AZ SWANA).

To our 16th hole Breakfast Club members – some of which lined up extremely early this morning – we can’t thank you enough for your support of the tournament and your commitment to being the best fans in golf. Thank you, and RESPECT!

Have you seen tomorrow’s forecast? The weather looks absolutely incredible for Sunday’s final round, with the action beginning Sunday at 9:04 a.m. with the leaders – Tony Finau, Webb Simpson and Hudson Swafford – teeing off at 11:05 a.m. Click below to see complete final-round pairings and tee times.[/vc_column_text][mk_button dimension=”flat” size=”medium” url=”/wp-content/uploads/r4-tee-times.pdf” target=”_blank” align=”center” fullwidth=”true” bg_color=”#7bb801″]2020 WM PHOENIX OPEN FINAL ROUND PAIRINGS[/mk_button][/vc_column][/vc_row]

J.B. Holmes Leads the Pack After Friday’s Second Round

February 1, 2020 by WM Phoenix Open Leave a Comment

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1580524528804{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]Friday’s second round at the 2020 Waste Management Phoenix Open rode into twilight this afternoon, with the last putt dropping into the cup in front of a rainbow sunset backdrop. Two-time WM Phoenix Open champion J.B. Holmes set the pace at 13-under par, but It’s still anyone’s tournament with a host of PGA TOUR superstars just behind the leader chasing their chance at the $1.3 million winner’s check.

Holmes’ lead is largely courtesy of a three-hole stretch on his front nine (started on No. 10) where he carded two birdies and an eagle down TPC Scottsdale’s “stadium stretch,” driving the green on No. 17 to six and a half feet. A pair of bogeys on 9 and 18 kept Holmes within striking distance from the field. Wyndham Clark’s menacing pace slowed down during the second round, but he’s still in the thick of things at one off the leader at 12-under par. Byeong-Hun An finished strong after a benign front-nine, carding five birdies on the back to finish at 11-under.

The remaining 67 PGA TOUR players who made the cut will regroup for Saturday’s third round starting at 9 a.m. You can find the pairings here:[/vc_column_text][mk_button dimension=”flat” size=”medium” url=”/wp-content/uploads/r3-tee-times-1.pdf” target=”_blank” align=”center” fullwidth=”true”]2020 WM PHOENIX OPEN SATURDAY PAIRINGS[/mk_button][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1580524952745{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]GreenOut tomorrow! Don’t forget to wear green tomorrow for the annual Saturday Green Out promoting title sponsor Waste Management’s efforts to Recycle Right and help make the Waste Management Phoenix Open the largest Zero Waste event in the world!

Thinking about becoming a member of the 2020 16th Hole Breakfast Club? Get here early, RESPECT the new rules and have fun! Be a Great Fan!
