Johnny Miller – The Desert Fox

Johnny Miller had a remarkable run as a professional golfer, and some of his best golf was played on the West Coast swing each year, especially in desert locales. As a result, some called him the Desert Fox for his wiley play in desert venues.

Typical of his success is how he played in The Phoenix Open. He won by one shot in 1974 over Lanny Wadkins, but then came back in 1975 to win going away – by 14 shots over Jerry Heard, establishing the record that still stands to this day.

Billy Casper – A Great Champion

Billy Casper won The Phoenix Open at The Arizona Country Club in 1957, with a 3-shot victory over Mike Souchak and Dr. Cary Middlecoff. He won $2,000 for that winning effort.
Casper went on to two second-place finishes in The Phoenix Open, including a tie for second in 1962…the year Arnold Palmer won by 12 strokes over Casper and two others. Casper placed 2nd nine years later in 1971 behind winner Miller Barber.
