2011 FedEx Cup Champion Bill Haas, 2007 tournament champion Aaron Baddeley and 2009 PGA Championship winner Y.E. Yang are among the last commitments to the 2012 Waste Management Phoenix Open. In addition, 2008 Masters Champion Trevor Immelman and 20-time PGA TOUR winner Davis Love III also committed today to play in next week’s Waste Management Phoenix Open. 2009 US Open Champion Lucas Glover withdrew from the tournament due to a knee injury.
Five of the top seven and 96 of the top 125 leading Money Winners from the 2011 PGA TOUR Season have committed to play in the 2012 Waste Management Phoenix Open. The field includes 19 of the top 30 from the 2011 FedEx Cup final standings. A field of 132 players will vie for the $6.1 million purse, the $1,098,000 first-place check and FedEx Cup points.
Webb Simpson (No. 2), Nick Watney (No. 3), Dustin Johnson (No. 5), Matt Kuchar (No. 6) and Bill Haas (No. 7) are the five 2011 leading Money Winners to commit.
PGA TOUR members had until 5 p.m. today to commit to play in the Waste Management Phoenix Open. Non-committed players participating in the Farmers Insurance Open have a half-hour from the end of 2nd round play to commit. In addition, any previously uncommitted player placing in the top-10 at the Farmers Insurance Open also can commit to play Sunday evening.
Other notables in the 2012 Waste Management Phoenix Open field include; Phil Mickelson, Keegan Bradley, Bubba Watson, defending tournament champion Mark Wilson, Gary Woodland, Vijay Singh, Rickie Fowler, Kenny Perry, Justin Leonard and Charles Howell III. A number of local golfers also have committed including Robert Garrigus, Ricky Barnes, Martin Laird, Billy Mayfair, Pat Perez, Chez Reavie, Mathew Goggin and Kevin Streelman.
Three-time Phoenix Open Champion Mark Calcavecchia, PGA TOUR rookie Harris English, 15-time PGA TOUR winner Fred Couples, Scottsdale resident Jeff Quinney and Arizona State University graduate Matt Jones received the five sponsor exemptions.
The Waste Management Phoenix Open will be played January 30 – February 5, 2012, at the TPC Scottsdale. The tournament host Thunderbirds have raised more than $75 million for charities, with more than $45 million generated since 2004. The 2012 edition will mark the 77th playing of the event, making it one of the five oldest events on the PGA TOUR (not including the major championships).
