As we work to increase recycling participation at the Waste Management Phoenix Open this year, one of our main tasks is to do a better job of educating golf attendees about what is and is not recyclable along the course. With the help of the attendees, we believe we can greatly reduce the amount of waste generated at the tournament. Here is an overview of what patrons can expect to see this year, as well as some tips on how to properly recycle.
Recycling Stations
This year, there will be Recycling Stations in high-traffic areas, such as the Food Court and Corporate Village. These stations will have both a recycling container and a food waste container, with highly visible signage that describes what goes in each.
GreenOps Recycling Kiosks
The popular GreenOps Recycling Kiosks will be back in action at the Waste Management Phoenix Open this year. These units look like regular soda vending machines, but you use them for recycling instead. The greatest part? You get coupons for recycling! Simply follow the on-screen instructions to recycle plastic bottles or cans, and you’ll receive a coupon with a discount or prize from participating vendors. There will be 12 machines at the tournament this year, including one in the Waste Management Expo area at the entrance.
Recycling Ambassadors
Recycling Ambassadors will be staffing many of the Recycling Stations to answer questions about recycling and to show patrons where to throw their food waste and recyclable materials.
Tips for Attendees
We hope all tournament attendees will follow these guidelines before throwing away their waste:
1. All plastic bottles are recyclable—make sure to put your water bottles, soda containers, and other plastic products in the green recycling container.
2. Pour out extra liquid in the food waste bin before putting plastic bottles in the recycling container. Liquids contaminate the recycle stream, and even a little bit can damage the materials, which means they can no longer be recycled.
3. Plastic plates and clam shells are recyclable. Make sure to scrape off any excess food into the waste bin before putting plastic plates in the recycle bin.
4. All paper plates and cups should be placed in the WASTE bin! These products, along with food waste from the tournament, will be turned into high-quality compost.
5. If you have any questions—don’t hesitate to ask a Recycling Ambassador for help!
